Guided walk in small groups through the unseen areas of Liverpool Cathedral, including the top of the tower, for participants aged 14 or over.
The Above and Beyond Tour is back at Liverpool Cathedral on Wednesday 11 November, from 12:00 to 14:00. It's a guided walk through the unseen parts of the cathedral, the kind of hidden corners and back-of-house spaces that are usually off-limits to the general public. You'll be in a small group, led by an expert guide who takes you from top to bottom, including a trip right up to the top of the tower.
It's worth remembering what you're actually walking through. The cathedral is the largest in the UK and one of the largest in the world, a Grade I listed building that Historic England calls 'the last undoubted masterpiece of Gothic craftsmanship in England'. It's the crowning achievement of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed Battersea Power Station and the red telephone box. Inside, you'll find the Grand Organ, with 10,268 pipes — the largest pipe organ in the UK — and an art collection that includes work by Tracey Emin, Elisabeth Frink and Charles Lutyens.
There are a few practical things to keep in mind before you book. The route involves a lot of steps and very narrow passages, so it can't accommodate anyone with mobility issues, and it's not suitable if you're acrophobic or claustrophobic. Everyone on the tour has to be 14 or older. It's a proper walk, not a stroll, so come prepared for that.
