Live gig with New York band Widowspeak as headliner and support from singer-songwriter Sam Burton at the Brudenell Social Club.
Widowspeak play Brudenell Social Club on Thursday 12 November, with Sam Burton opening. Widowspeak are a New York City band led by songwriters Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas, a married couple who've been working at their sound for sixteen years. They started out hauling gear between now-closed NYC venues like Glasslands, Cake Shop, 285 Kent and Death By Audio, and ran a practice space in Monster Island Basement, which is now a Trader Joe's.
Between touring stints across North America, South America and Europe, they both keep day jobs: Robert is a carpenter and Molly is a waitress. Their seventh record, Roses, was recorded last January at the Old Carpet Factory on the Greek island of Hydra, mixed by Alex Farrar at Drop of Sun Studios and mastered by Greg Obis at Chicago Mastering. Longtime touring members Willy Muse, John Andrews and Noah Bond play with them, and critics often point to the interplay between Hamilton's languid, textured voice and Thomas's visceral guitar playing.
Opening the night is Sam Burton, a Palestinian-American folk-leaning singer-songwriter who moved from Utah to Los Angeles in 2016. Fairweather Friend is his third solo record, and he wrote it with solo performance in mind, so he'll be taking the stage on his own. Between his set and Widowspeak's, that's two distinct songwriters on one bill.
