Stage adaptation of Victoria Wood's sitcom 'dinnerladies', with Les Dennis as Stan, directed by Sean Foley.
Victoria Wood's dinnerladies is coming to the Leeds Grand Theatre from Tuesday 29 June to Saturday 3 July 2027. It's the first time the sitcom has ever been put on stage, and the first piece of Wood's work to be produced by her estate. The original show ran on BBC One more than 25 years ago, and it's just as people remember it: a Manchester canteen full of sharp humour, warmth, and those brilliantly observed characters. The stage adaptation brings back the whole crew — Stan, Bren, Tony, Dolly, Jean, Twinkle, Anita and the rest of the canteen staff — for a fresh helping of laughs and chaos.
Sean Foley directs, and the cast features Les Dennis as the maintenance man Stan, Sue Cleaver as Jean, Karen Henthorn as Dolly, and Amy Drake as Bren. There's a bit of personal history in that, too: Les Dennis knew Victoria personally, having worked the comedy circuit with her in the 1970s. They were both finalists on New Faces, which he describes as the Britain's Got Talent of its day.
The show runs about 2 hours and 20 minutes, including the interval, and is recommended for ages 14 and over. It's a multi-day run, so you've got plenty of options to fit in: Tuesday 29 June at 7:30pm; Wednesday 30 June at 2:30pm and 7:30pm; Thursday 1 July at 2:30pm and 7:30pm, with the evening performance being BSL; Friday 2 July at 7:30pm, which is captioned; and Saturday 3 July with a 2:30pm audio-described matinee and a 7:30pm evening show.
