Live folk show by Toria Wooff, following her debut album 'Toria Wooff' and her second album 'Aleister'.
Toria Wooff plays the Hyde Park Book Club at Brudenell Social Club on Wednesday 17 March, with doors opening at 19:30. She'll be joined by guests to be announced, so it's a full night of music rather than just a single set.
Wooff is touring her second album, Aleister, which follows the self-titled debut that got a lot of attention from Uncut, Clash, Shindig, Record Collector, BBC Radio 6 and Radio X. Aleister runs across eleven brooding folk songs, and the sound is built around tape-saturated textures, drones, vintage keyboards, orchestral flourishes and rich acoustic instrumentation. All that sits behind a voice that moves from hushed intimacy to startling intensity.
She describes her live show — played either solo or with a close-knit band — as drawing as much from late-sixties and seventies British and Irish folk recordings as from contemporary songwriting. It's folk tradition colliding with gothic literature, with northern landscapes brushing against the occult. If you're into that sort of thing, it's a good place to start.
