Concert by Mystery Ensemble of Danny Elfman's music from Tim Burton's films, with Beetlejuice, Corpse Bride, Batman and Sweeney Todd, in St George's Church.
Mystery Ensemble are playing St George's Church on Saturday 31 October, with a set built around the music of Tim Burton's films. It's a Halloween night gig, and the programme fits the date: it works its way through the soundscapes that shaped Burton's cinematic universe, with Danny Elfman, his lifelong collaborator and one of the most distinctive film composers of our time, at its heart.
Alongside Elfman, the set draws on Corpse Bride, Beetlejuice, Batman and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The arrangements blend soaring voices and bold instrumental colours, and the mood shifts from the macabre to the magical — exactly the kind of thing that works in a church on the night of the 31st. If you've spent any time with those films, you'll recognise the melodies; hearing them live, with voices and instruments rather than a screen, is a different experience entirely.
Mystery Ensemble is a group of professional musicians founded in 2021 by Almin Alexander, who's spent more than 12 years in the music industry. They've played over 40 shows across the UK in their first year, paying tribute to composers like Ludovico Einaudi, Hans Zimmer, John Williams and Joe Hisaishi. They specialise in staging unique programmes in non-standard venues, and the magic here is said to come as much from the musicians as from the surrounding architecture of St George's Church.
