DeNada Dance Theatre's queer dance adaptation of Christopher Marlowe's 'Edward II', reimagined as a modern high school story.
DeNada Dance Theatre bring Edward II to the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre on Friday 30 October, the first of a run that goes until Wednesday 18 November. It's a queer dance adaptation by Carlos Pons Guerra of Christopher Marlowe's play, which tells the story of the King of England who fell in love with his male court favourite and the war that tore them apart.
Rather than keeping it in the royal court, the production moves the whole thing into a modern high school. It's billed as a fusion of Renaissance tragedy and contemporary theatricality, and the company describes it as a 'queer access' show — hormone-fuelled, spectacularly camp and aggressively poignant. An international cast dances the part, and the music is an original score by Luis Miguel Cobo that runs from arcade sounds to medieval textures, with designs by April Dalton.
