The Slow Show, the Manchester indie band of Rob Goodwin, plays the Howard Assembly Room with a special set of Opera North.
The Slow Show play the Howard Assembly Room on Thursday 12 November, presented by Opera North. It's a Manchester band, and the night marks the tenth anniversary of their debut album, White Water, which they're revisiting in a new light — more touching, intense and closer than before, they say. The set blends melancholic indie with orchestral expansiveness and frontman Rob Goodwin's own voice.
Goodwin has been performing since 2006, and White Water was the record that put the band on the map. The songs combine a magisterial beauty with the confidence to let their spellbinding stories find their mark; rarely since The Blue Nile has a band created such a powerful, fully realised world from what initially appears such a minimal framework. The anniversary show brings those songs back, but presented in a way that feels more immediate than the original recordings.
On stage, the band is Rob Goodwin, Frederik 't Kindt, Chris Hough and Joel Byrne-McCullough. They describe the evening as a rare concert experience full of longing, beauty and atmosphere — a night that leans into the quieter, more textural side of indie rock. It's a 14+ event, and the room holds 300 people, so it's a relatively small crowd for a night like this.
