16-piece swing big band of The Northern Swing Orchestra plays Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Count Basie numbers with guest singer Ben Eagle.
The Northern Swing Orchestra are playing Swillington Sports and Social Club on Sunday 1 November, with the music starting at 3:30pm. It's a 16-piece big band based right here in Leeds, and this one comes with a guest: Ben Eagle, a lifelong Sinatra fan making his debut with the orchestra.
What they do is exactly what the name suggests. They draw on a huge swing-band library of numbers made famous by Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Count Basie, and they pair those with new arrangements by some of the country's leading composers and arrangers. There are vocalists on the bill too, singing classics from Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Judy Garland. If you're not one for sitting still, dancing is available.
Ben Eagle brings a bit of a different background to the front of the stage. He trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London and has worked in plays, musicals and concerts across the country, including a spot at the Royal Albert Hall. He's taken Shakespeare tours to the USA, appeared on television and works as a voiceover artist, so he's as much at home with a script as he is with a song. The orchestra itself has released an album, Easy To Love.
