Post-punk band The Nightingales, formed from The Prefects, play the Brudenell Social Club in Headingley with guests.
The Nightingales play Brudenell Social Club on Wednesday 24 March, as part of a full UK tour. They're a post-punk band with a history that stretches back to 1979, when they formed from the remains of The Prefects, Birmingham's original punk group. The Prefects had toured on The Clash's White Riot Tour, recorded Peel sessions and released on Rough Trade, and The Nightingales carried that lineage forward.
For years they've been built around the songs and voice of lyricist and singer Robert Lloyd. John Robb once called them 'the misfits' misfits', and John Peel championed them, and they built a cult following on a run of critically acclaimed singles, three albums and plenty of radio sessions. They've shared stages with acts as different as Bo Diddley and Nico. After folding in the late eighties, they regrouped in 2004 and have since released eight vinyl singles, two mini-albums and ten full-length studio albums, plus a movie soundtrack. Stewart Lee's documentary King Rocker brought them to Fire Records, who reissued their back catalogue in deluxe editions.
Their most recent record, The Awful Truth, came out in 2025, and they've since added viola player Natalie Mason to the line-up. They toured as guests of The Damned following that release, and this tour is their return to the stage. They work without a manager or agent and have toured the UK, mainland Europe and the USA.
