Unicorn Theatre's stage adaptation of Piers Torday's eco-thriller, part of the National Theatre Nationwide tour, with captioned performances.
The Last Wild comes to City Varieties Music Hall on Friday 2 April and Saturday 3 April, a world-premiere stage adaptation of Piers Torday's best-selling eco-thriller, which won the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize. It's adapted by Jude Christian and directed by Unicorn Theatre's Artistic Director Rachel Bagshaw.
The story follows 12-year-old Kester, who lives in a silent, quarantined future where animals no longer exist. That changes when talking pigeons and a bossy cockroach draw him into an adventure to save the last of the wild. It's billed as an epic about courage, friendship and fighting for a world worth saving, packed with action, heart and humour. The production is creatively captioned, so it's accessible for d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences.
Behind the scenes, this is Unicorn's first co-production with the National Theatre, and it's part of the National Theatre Nationwide programme — a partnership with 12 theatres across England supported by Arts Council England. The programme tours productions with their original casts to every English region, alongside subsidised ticketing and free touring performances for schools.
