Concert by The Emerald Dawn, a symphonic art-rock quartet from Edinburgh, and This Winter Machine, a neo-prog band from Yorkshire.
The Emerald Dawn and This Winter Machine share a bill at Seven Arts on Saturday 24 October, with the music starting at 8pm. It's a double bill of two bands that both lean into the longer, more expansive side of rock, though they arrive at it from different directions.
The Emerald Dawn are a symphonic art-rock quartet who formed in Edinburgh in 2010. Tree Stewart and Ally Carter started the group, and they moved to St Ives in Cornwall in 2011, later adding drummer Tom Jackson and bassist David Greenaway in 2018. They describe their sound as a blend of rock, classical, jazz, folk and world music, and they've put out six studio albums to date. The most recent, The Land, the Sea, the Air (Volume I), came out in October 2025 as the first part of a double concept project, so that's likely to be a good place to start if you're catching up. They've been voted one of the top ten bands in Prog Magazine's Readers' Poll and have played festivals like ArtRock in Germany and Crescendo in France.
This Winter Machine formed here in Yorkshire in 2016 as a neo-prog band. They draw on 80s Rush and Marillion, alongside more modern names like Porcupine Tree and Riverside, and they've shared stages with Wishbone Ash, Magnum and Focus. They're currently working on their fifth album, so they'll be playing as a band with a fair bit of material behind them.
