Concert by Suede and Manic Street Preachers at the First Direct Arena, with a standing floor.
Suede and Manic Street Preachers are playing the First Direct Arena on Friday 30 October, two of the bands that helped define British alternative rock in the early nineties sharing one bill. Both formed around the same time, and both have spent the decades since building their own distinct corners of the scene. Suede came through as pioneers of Britpop, known for their dramatic style and songs like 'Animal Nitrate', 'Trash' and 'Beautiful Ones'. The Manics built their name on politically charged lyrics and powerful songwriting, with 'Motorcycle Emptiness', 'If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next' and 'Design for Life' among their best-known tracks. Over their careers, both have released multiple chart-topping albums, earned widespread critical acclaim and built devoted global fanbases, and both are known for their live shows.
It's a double bill that puts two different streaks of nineties guitar music on the same stage. Suede brought the glam and the drama; the Manics brought the politics and the noise. Seeing them together in one night gives you a good look at how that era sounded from two different angles. Both have stayed active long after the Britpop label stopped sticking, and both have a long list of songs to draw from, so there's plenty of ground to cover across the evening.
