Clowning show by Ugly Bucket Theatre about the UK's food banks, combining physical clowning, electronica and personal testimony.
Ugly Bucket Theatre bring STUFFED to The Warehouse in Holbeck on Saturday 31 October, a clowning show that takes the UK's food banks as its subject. It's a Liverpool-based company, and they wrote the piece after watching food bank usage climb through the early 2020s: in 2023, the charity Trussell reported delivering more than 3.2 million food parcels, up from around 60,000 in 2010.
On stage, five clowns search for hope and community. The show focuses on the 'bad stuff' and the helplessness people face rather than on the food itself, and it mixes physicality, electronica, and uncompromising personal testimony from the frontlines of the country's food banks. It's directed by Rachael Smart and Grace Gallagher, who also performs in it. Gallagher says the clowning is about building deeper connections and empathy, and that the show is intended to be confronting. It won the Stage Fringe Five 2024 and has drawn five-star reviews.
Beyond the stage, the company runs 'The Good Stuff', a wrap-around project that includes a free community meal, an action-based panel, and a local food donation drive. The show was created in association with Liverpool's Unity Theatre.
