Free demonstration and hands-on lecture by sculptor and stone carver Alan Micklethwaite on the techniques and tools of stone carving, within the Henry Moore Institute's 'Adrian Stokes, Inside Out' research season.
Alan Micklethwaite is bringing a stone-carving demonstration and hands-on lecture to The Henry Moore Institute on Wednesday 21 October, from 14:00 to 17:00. It's part of the institute's research season, Adrian Stokes, Inside Out, which looks at the sculptural imagination of the English critic Adrian Stokes (1902-72). Stokes was a key mid-twentieth-century voice who combined modernist values of direct carving with speculative psychoanalytic thought, a sensitivity to natural materials, and a deep understanding of pre-modern artmaking.
Micklethwaite is a sculptor, stone carver and conservator who's worked on the conservation of historic buildings for more than 30 years. He draws on Stokes' writing, with particular attention to The Stones of Rimini (1934), to demonstrate the techniques, processes and tools of stone carving. As part of that, he'll compare English limestone and Carrara marble, reconstructing key details from Agostino di Duccio's fifteenth-century reliefs for the Tempio Malatestiano in Rimini.
The season was conceived and organised with Dr Ruth Ezra (University of St Andrews) and Dr Jeremy Melius (University of York), and supported by Villa I Tatti. The Henry Moore Institute, in the centre of Leeds, is part of the Henry Moore Foundation and houses galleries, a Research Library and an Archive of Sculptors' Papers.
