A spooky trail for families at Abbey House Museum, featuring Victorian streets, crafts, and petrifying pictures.
Spooky Streets runs at Abbey House Museum from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November, a family trail that takes over the museum's Victorian streets for the half-term break. It's put on by Leeds Museums and Galleries, and it turns the ground floor into a walk of the weird.
The trail starts on the ground floor with Stephen Harding Gate, which is the 19th-century equivalent of a modern high street. From there, you wander through the back streets that house the window washer woman's home and a Sunday School, before heading upstairs to the Childhood and Community Galleries, which are filled with original toys from the museum's collection. Along the way, witches brew potions, spider webs cling to the walls, headless ladies pull carts and skeletons pull pints. There's a photographic studio where you can dress up as a spooky character or a Victorian and pose for a picture, and the whole thing is tied together with a tricky trail and a monster bag of crafts to take home.
Across the road, in the grounds of Kirkstall Abbey — one of the country's most complete Cistercian ruins — sits the Abbey Cafe, so it's easy enough to make a day of it. The museum is at Abbey Walk, Abbey Road, Kirkstall, Leeds LS5 3EH.
