Social gele-tying session inspired by Nigerian and Yoruba tradition, where attendees learn to tie a traditional headwrap and practice on a friend with drinks.
Sip and Tie (Gele) comes to 31 Burley Rd on Saturday 31 October, a session that puts the tradition of gele tying at the centre of the afternoon. If you've never come across one before, a gele is a traditional Nigerian headwrap, most commonly associated with the Yoruba people, made by folding, wrapping and shaping fabric around the head. It's a craft that takes a bit of patience to get right, and that's exactly what this session is built around.
There's no previous experience needed, which is the best part. You'll follow an experienced gele-tying artist through the basics of a classic style, and once you've got the hang of it, you'll practise tying a gele on a friend. The whole thing is set in a relaxed atmosphere, with drinks flowing throughout and delicious treats to keep you going while you work. It's as much about the social side as it is about the tying.
The session celebrates the tradition of the gele in a setting rooted in Nigerian and Yoruba culture, so it's a good chance to get a proper look at the craft and the history behind it. The drinks and treats are part of the deal, and the social atmosphere is a big part of the draw, making it a bit more like a get-together than a formal class.
