High-energy jazz tribute to Tubby Hayes by the Simon Spillett Quartet, led by tenor saxophonist Simon Spillett, at Seven Arts in Chapel Allerton.
The Simon Spillett Quartet play Seven Arts on Thursday 29 October, as part of the Jazz Leeds autumn programme. The set is a tribute to Tubby Hayes, the British jazz icon, and it's a high-energy one. The repertoire comes from a deep dive into Hayes's albums Tubbs in New York, Mexican Green and The Jazz Couriers In Concert, with associated standards and ballads mixed in.
Simon Spillett leads the quartet on tenor sax, and he knows the subject better than most: he's the author of the definitive Hayes biography, The Long Shadow of The Little Giant. He's joined on piano by Pete Billington, with Alec Dankworth on bass and Pete Cater on drums. The critic Derek Ansell, writing for the Newbury Weekly News, has described Spillett's technique as one that "outstrips most of his contemporaries."
