Live gig by Shabaka Hutchings, bringing his 2026 album 'Of The Earth' to the Brudenell Social Club.
Shabaka plays Brudenell Social Club on Tuesday 10 November, with guests joining him on the bill. He's touring his 2026 album Of The Earth, a record he wrote, performed, produced and mixed entirely on his own.
If you've followed his work, you'll know him as a bandleader, multi-instrumentalist and producer who moves between jazz, electronic, spiritual and diasporic traditions. Of The Earth pulls together two sides of that: the dance-driven energy of Sons of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming, and the quieter, breath-led language of his more recent solo explorations. Much of it was created while he was travelling, built from portable instruments with looping rhythmic structures underpinning expansive choral melodies. He plays those melodies primarily on alto flute alongside saxophone, and he brings in his own voice, using rap as an extension of rhythm and breath. His approach to the flute comes from years of study across traditions from Japan, the Americas and beyond.
It's a bit of a pivot for him, bringing the dancefloor energy of his bigger bands into the same space as his more stripped-back solo work. The alto flute takes the lead here, and the looping rhythms hold the choral melodies together. With the guests on the bill, it's a full night of music rather than a single set.
