Jazz duo of John Dyson on saxophone and Kathy Dyson on guitar play original music and standards at Seven Arts in Chapel Allerton.
John Dyson is playing Seven Arts on Wednesday 21 October, as part of the Rush Hour Jazz series. It's a double-bill of sorts: he's on saxophone, and his partner Kathy Dyson is on guitar, with Steve Crocker on bass and Steve Hanley on drums filling out the rhythm section.
Both live and work here in Yorkshire. John toured Western Europe for years before coming back north in 1996, and Kathy is a jazz guitarist, composer, educator and researcher who writes and performs in an octet, duo, trio and quartet, playing original music and standards. Among those is Inside Outside and the duo Emily Remembered, which she records and performs with Deirdre Cartwright in memory of Emily Remler.
Chris Parker of Jazzwise described the couple's self-penned material as "airy, accessible themes", with Dyson's saxophone floating with "almost Getz-like purity and warmth" over Kathy's guitar. That's the sound you'll hear on the night: their own writing, with John's sax and Kathy's guitar taking the lead over the bass and drums.
