Republica and Trampolene play the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds.
Republica are playing Brudenell Social Club on Saturday 31 October, with Trampolene supporting. It's a double bill that pulls from two very different corners of the indie world, and the venue is the Brudenell, which fits the mix.
Republica are the British indie-dance band fronted by Nigerian-born vocalist Saffron, who sang with N-Joi, the Shamen and Jah Wobble before they formed. They signed to Deconstruction and broke out with 'Ready to Go' from their self-titled debut, then followed it up with Speed Ballads in 1998. If you remember them from the nineties, that's the sound they're known for — dance-floor energy with a proper indie edge.
Trampolene are a Swansea-formed alternative rock band fronted by poet Jack Jones. They're known for supercharged indie rock mixed with spoken word, and they've had UK chart success including the number one album Breakers, alongside records like Rules of Love & War and tracks like 'Storm Heaven'. It's a different kind of energy from Republica — more guitar-driven and rooted in the spoken word tradition — so the two acts should sit side by side without stepping on each other.

As for the venue, the Brudenell Social Club is a lively, open-minded Leeds spot that takes music and art under a wide, boundary-free umbrella. Its open music policy champions freedom and creation, and it's best known for hosting secret gigs by bands like Franz Ferdinand and the Kaiser Chiefs. It's a place that doesn't stick to one sound, which suits a night that brings together a dance-leaning act and a spoken-word-inflected rock band.
Doors open at 19:30, and tickets are £30 in advance. The gig is on Saturday 31 October at the Brudenell Social Club, 33 Queen's Rd, Burley, Leeds LS6 1NY.
