First edition of a community festival of radio makers, sound artists and podcasters who gather local sounds and stories for the Chapel FM Radio Theatre.
Chapel FM Arts Centre is hosting the first Radio Maker Festival from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 October, a new annual event for the Seacroft hub. The weekend brings together around 45 radio makers, sound artists, audio journalists and podcasters, with performances from La Compagnie du Tire-Laine, a music ensemble from Lille, France — Leeds' twin city.
The festival asks what role radio plays in a changing world, and where poetry, songwriting, audio drama and storytelling fit into a station's output. It's not a passive thing to watch: participants work in small groups and head out into the local area — historic markets, forest gardens, working-class pubs, asylum-seeker communities and libraries — to gather sounds and stories. Those recordings are then shaped into short audio features to be shared in the Chapel FM Radio Theatre.
Beyond the recording, the weekend includes shared meals of global food, live music and art, with the option of home stays with local community members. It's the first edition of what's intended as a new annual festival at Chapel FM Arts Centre, a community hub in Seacroft that describes itself as 'a house of creativity, art, music, writing & more with radio at the core'.
