Family Halloween activity at Leeds City Museum where visitors design their own pumpkin and the winning ideas are turned into real pumpkins for display.
Leeds City Museum is running its Pumpkin Competition from Thursday 1 October to Sunday 1 November, and it's open to everyone from ages 5 to 95. It's one of those family favourites that comes back every October, and the way it works is a bit different from your usual carving contest.
Instead of bringing in a finished pumpkin, you start with a piece of paper. You pick up an entry sheet at the museum and draw your design on it, using whatever art materials you fancy. The brief is wide open: they're looking for spooky, funny or completely bonkers pumpkin masterpieces, so you can go as weird as you like. Once you've finished your drawing, you hand it back in at the museum, and it needs to be in at least a week before Halloween.
That's where the museum team takes over. They pick out the winning ideas and turn them into real pumpkins, which then go on display across the museum over Halloween. Once they're up, it's over to the visitors to decide the people's choice winner in a poll, and that winner gets a prize. So your drawing could end up as a proper pumpkin on display in the city centre.
Every week we pick 🏆 the 5 best 🏆 things to do in Leeds and send them to your inbox. Just one weekly email, no spam.

It's free to take part, and the museum itself is a Give What You Can museum, which means you can contribute what you're able to. You'll find it at Leeds City Museum, Millennium Square, Leeds, LS2 8BH, and it's an indoor event, so it's a good shout for a rainy October half-term.
