Contemporary opera fusing rap, hip-hop and theatre, based on TD Moyo's play 'Caspers' and staged by Northern Opera Group at the Leeds New Opera Festival.
Our Eyes Looking for God comes to the LSA Theatre at the Leeds School of Arts on Thursday 5 November, as part of the Leeds New Opera Festival 2026. It's Northern Opera Group's first co-production with the Barbican, following a sold-out London premiere run.
It's billed as an opera, a ghost story and a love story, and it was developed in collaboration with Nubian Noire, a Leeds-based Black cultural agency. The story is based on TD Moyo's play Caspers and follows two cousins, Adjani and Kamal, on their journey to a party in Toxteth. What starts as a trip to a party opens up into an exploration of cultural identity, aspirations and the social realities shaping young Black British lives. The production fuses rap, hip-hop and theatre, and The Guardian praised it for capturing "the spirit of opera – its fluidity, extremity and larger-than-life gestures."
Behind it is a full creative team: writer and director TD Moyo, composer Renell Shaw and librettist April Koyejo-Audiger, with movement director Matheus Daniel, musical director Luke Bacchus and designer Amanda Mascarenhas. The whole thing is staged as part of the Leeds New Opera Festival 2026, so it's one of several opera-focused works running across the city that November.
