Carriageworks Theatre play about the generational divide, binary politics and how the online world is changing society.
OFF GRID is at Carriageworks Theatre on Saturday 24 October, part of the theatre's Autumn & Winter 2026 season. It's a production that turns on the generational divide, binary politics, and how the online world is rapidly changing society — three things that feel pretty impossible to ignore these days, and that the show puts front and centre.
It's playing in The Studio, the smaller of the theatre's two spaces, which holds 77. The main auditorium seats 349, so this is a more intimate room for a show that looks at how we talk to each other when we're on opposite sides of a screen. The subject matter — the gap between generations and the way politics gets flattened into binaries online — is exactly the kind of thing that works better when you're close to the action.
Carriageworks itself is a Grade II listed building that stood as the West Riding Carriage Manufactory from 1848, before it was reimagined and opened in 2005 as a city-centre cultural hub. It's home to Leeds Community Arts Network (Leeds CAN), a group of fourteen community-led arts societies, and to the Carriageworks Young Theatre Makers (CYTM), the resident youth theatre for 11-19 year olds run under Artistic Director Ruth Cooper. Throughout the year it hosts many of Leeds' best arts events, including the Leeds Young Film Festival, INDIs Film Festival, Leeds Lit Festival, Photo North Festival, and the annual pantomime.
