Live gig by London art-rock outfit Modern Woman, fronted by Sophie Harris, with Casual Smart at the Brudenell Social Club.
Modern Woman play Brudenell Social Club on Tuesday 27 October, with Casual Smart opening the bill. It's a Hyde Park Book Club night, so you've got two bands on the same ticket.
Modern Woman are a London art-rock outfit fronted by primary songwriter Sophie Harris. This is their first show in Leeds since their debut album, Johnny's Dreamworld, came out on 1 May via the new label One Little Independent Records. The record draws on post-punk, avant-garde and folk traditions, with lyrics steeped in literary detail and filmic atmosphere — the kind of thing that works as well on a record as it does on a stage.
The band came together when Harris met violinist and composer David Denyer, joined by Juan Brint-Gutiérrez on bass and saxophone and Adam Blackhurst on drums. That saxophone adds another layer to the mix, and with a violin in the line-up, there's a bit more going on than your standard four-piece. The album was produced by Joel Burton, who has also worked with Naima Bock, Katy J Pearson and Vanishing Twin.
