Immersive music and light installation by Opera North that blends Monteverdi's 'Orfeo' with Indian classical music and live electronics.
Fractures is an immersive music and light installation commissioned and produced by Opera North for Light Night Leeds, and it's taking over the Howard Assembly Room on Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 October. It's a piece that draws on Jasdeep Singh Degun's award-winning Orpheus, which blends Monteverdi's Orfeo with the traditions of Indian classical music, and runs those threads together with acoustic and live electronic improvisations. The installation is staged at the Howard Assembly Room, a refurbished heritage venue in the heart of Leeds known for its acoustics and for hosting everything from folk and jazz to rock and contemporary classical, with immersive lighting transforming the room.
The line-up brings together a wide range of voices and instruments. Musical director Kaviraj Singh performs on santoor and voice, joined by soprano Amy Freston, Annette Saunders on harpsichord, Liz Hanks on cello, and Camillo Tirado on tabla and live electronics. It's a mix that puts the baroque harpsichord and soprano alongside the santoor and tabla, with the electronics tying them together.
