Interactive installation of three giant owls brought to life as glowing holograms inside sculptural birdhouses, inspired by the owl on Leeds' city crest.
Bird Song (Owls) is taking over Leeds City Museum as part of Light Night 2026, running from Wednesday 28 October to Thursday 29 October. It's a drop-in installation, so you can pop in whenever suits you rather than booking a specific slot.
The main thing you'll see are three giant owls brought to life as glowing holograms, each housed inside its own sculptural birdhouse. The whole idea comes from the owl that sits on Leeds' historic city crest, so it's a bit of a nod to the city's own imagery. You can stand right alongside the birds and take a photo, and while you're there, an immersive soundscape fills the room, turning it into the owls' imagined woodland home.
It's billed as a family favourite, and the drop-in format makes it easy to fit in with other Light Night plans. Beyond the visuals, there's a point to it: the display is framed as a way to find out why protecting wildlife and natural habitats is so important for the future of these birds. It's presented in partnership with Vision Zero.
