Workshop at the Leeds Print Workshop to create posters using the letterpress woodtype process.
Leeds Print Workshop is running a Letterpress: Woodtype Posters workshop on Saturday 28 November. It's a one-day session where you'll use letterpress to put together your own woodtype posters, working with the big, bold wooden letters that give the style its name. If you've ever wanted to get your hands on a press and see how it actually works, this is a good place to start.
The workshop is held at Leeds Print Workshop, based in Patrick Studios at LS9 7EH. It's a membership-based, not-for-profit printmaking co-operative and studio in the centre of Leeds, open to anyone with an interest in print. They run workshops and courses across a range of traditional printmaking processes, and members get access to the facilities, with the aim of keeping a workshop space affordable and accessible. The studio sits a short walk from the city's train and bus stations, so it's easy to get to from almost anywhere in the city.
Letterpress is one of those old-school techniques that's still around because it does something digital can't quite match. You're working with physical type, setting it by hand, and pressing it into the paper. Woodtype, in particular, is about the larger, more graphic end of that tradition — the kind of bold lettering you'd see on old posters and broadsides. Over the course of the day, you'll be arranging your own letters and printing your own posters to take home.
