Mental health charity Leeds Mind's firewalk fundraiser, where participants walk barefoot over red-hot embers in Victoria Gardens to raise money for mental health services.
Leeds Mind is bringing its firewalk back to Victoria Gardens on Wednesday 4 November, outside Leeds Art Gallery on The Headrow. It's the second time the mental health charity has run this in the city, and the premise is exactly what it sounds like: you walk barefoot over glowing, red-hot embers. The whole thing is guided by one of the UK's top firewalk companies, so you're not just thrown in the deep end.
Leeds Mind frames it as more than a physical challenge. They talk about it as a mental adventure — mind over matter — and a test of resilience and bravery. The evening starts with mental coaching and safety training led by Scott Bell, founder of UK Firewalk and a two-time Guinness World Record holder for the furthest distance walked on hot coals. That's where you get your head right before you actually step out onto the embers.
It's a step up from the inaugural event last year, which saw nearly 30 participants raise over £4,000 for local mental health services. This time around, Leeds Mind is partnering for the first time with Basis Yorkshire, a charity that supports sex workers and those who have experienced sexual exploitation or abuse. The sponsorship you raise is split between the two charities according to your choice, so you can decide how your fundraising is shared.
