Classical concert by the Leeds Haydn Players with an all-Mozart programme, including the overture to Don Giovanni, the bassoon concerto and Symphony No. 39.
Leeds Haydn Players are playing at West Park United Reformed Church on Sunday 18 October, and they're sticking to one composer for the whole afternoon: Mozart. It's an all-Mozart programme, so if you've got a soft spot for his work, this is a straightforward one to put in the diary.
They open with the Overture to Don Giovanni, the dramatic, high-energy start to one of his most famous operas. From there, the focus shifts to the Bassoon Concerto, a piece that puts the bassoon front and centre rather than tucked away in the orchestral texture. The afternoon finishes with Symphony No. 39, one of the great late symphonies, so the set moves from the opera house to a concerto and then to a full symphony.
It's a good spread across Mozart's output — operatic, solo, and symphonic — all in one go. If you're not usually one for classical concerts, this is a decent place to start, as these are some of his most recognisable works rather than the deep cuts. The whole thing runs from 15:30 to 17:30, so it's a Sunday afternoon affair rather than a late night.
