A talk by a museum conservator about caring for over a million objects at Leeds Museums & Galleries, linked to Abbey House Museum's conservation exhibition.
Keeping our History Safe is a talk at Abbey House Museum on Wednesday 25 November, from 10:30 to 12:30. It's an activity for children, and the whole thing is about museum conservation — the work that goes into looking after old things so they don't fall apart. An expert conservator will be leading it, talking through how they found their calling and the pitfalls of looking after more than a million objects held by Leeds Museums & Galleries. If you've ever wondered what actually happens behind the scenes to keep a city's collection together, this is where you'll find out.
The talk ties in with the museum's exhibition Behind The Streets: The Hidden Work of Museum Conservation Volunteers, which is part of the Heritage Leeds programme. That exhibition focuses on the volunteers who do the day-to-day work of conservation, so the talk fits right into it. It's a good way to see the practical side of what they're showing in the galleries.
Abbey House Museum itself is a family-friendly, interactive museum in Kirkstall that lets you step back into Victorian life. The Stephen Harding Gate is on the ground floor, with the Childhood and Community Galleries upstairs. Much of the place's character comes from Colonel T. Walter Harding, who lived there from 1890 to 1912. Across the road, in the grounds of Kirkstall Abbey — one of the country's most complete Cistercian ruins — sits the Abbey Cafe, which makes it easy to turn the morning into a full day out.
