Live show by folk trio Jon Doran & the Northern Assembly, reimagining traditional songs from across the British Isles, at the Black Horse Function Room.
Jon Doran & the Northern Assembly play the Black Horse Function Room in Otley on Sunday 1 November. It's a trio that takes traditional songs from across the British Isles and gives them a contemporary instrumental folk energy, with the storytelling kept front and centre. The band is led by Jon Doran, who was a BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award Finalist in 2019, and he's joined by Jordan Aikin and accordionist Heather Ferrier.
Their eponymous debut EP came out in 2024 and picked up a fair bit of airplay on BBC Radio 2, BBC Introducing North East and BBC Radio Lincolnshire. The reviews that followed focused on the layered arrangements and the way they blur the line between contemporary folk and traditional song — that's a good shorthand for what they do, taking old material and framing it in a sound that feels current rather than like a museum piece.
