Five-week beginner to advanced beginner silversmithing course in jewellery making taught by local designer-maker Sophie Newbound.
Bowery is running a five-week jewellery making course starting Tuesday 26 January 2027, with sessions running 6pm to 8pm. It's aimed at beginners and advanced beginners, so you don't need to have ever touched a torch or a file to get involved.
Over the five weeks, you'll work through the fundamentals of silversmithing: soldering, piercing and filing. The pace is kept slow enough that you can pursue your own designs rather than just following a set pattern, and all the metals and materials for the initial projects are provided. If your own designs end up needing more metal, you can buy it directly from the tutor.
The course is taught by Sophie Newbound, a local designer-maker with fifteen years of experience across beading, metalwork and, more recently, wax carving. Her interest in the craft started while she was living in London and taking silversmithing classes, and she's since built up her skills in her own workshop in north Leeds. She's a regular on the craft market circuit and recently exhibited her first collection at the MADE gallery at Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
