Jamil Sheriff leads a quartet of North of England jazz players in a tribute to Monk, Golson, Parker and Gillespie at Seven Arts.
Jamil Sheriff brings his quartet to Seven Arts on Sunday 15 November, as part of the JazzLeeds festival. The group is called 4 in 1, and the name gives away the set: it's a tribute to four of the biggest names in jazz, Thelonious Monk, Benny Golson, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. If you know those names, you know the territory — the angular, quirky lines of Monk, the hard-bop swing of Golson, and the high-velocity bebop of Parker and Gillespie. It's a broad stretch of the jazz canon to cover in one night, and the band does it by pulling from all four.
Sheriff leads from the piano, and he's joined by Will Howard on tenor sax, Sam Quintana on bass and Steve Hanley on drums. It's a quartet of players from across the North, and the set is described as a swinging, joyful affair with a few twists, as the group does things their own way rather than playing them straight. The Times has called Sheriff 'an excellent northern pianist who brings together a range of classic, contemporary, and urban approaches', which gives you a sense of where he's coming from — he's not just sticking to the old books.
Sheriff is based at Leeds Conservatoire, so this is a local pianist leading a local band. The date is part of the JazzLeeds festival, which runs across the city, so if you're out for this, there's plenty more to work your way through around the same time.

Tickets are £12 or £10 plus fees in advance, and £12 on the door. The music starts at 1.30pm, so it's a Sunday afternoon gig rather than an evening one — a good one to catch early and still have the rest of your day.
