Live music session by James Walsh, former frontman of Starsailor, and Ben Ottewell, former member of Gomez, at The Old Woollen.
James Walsh and Ben Ottewell are playing The Old Woollen on Monday 2 November, an evening that brings together two voices from very different corners of the British indie scene. Walsh is the frontman of Starsailor, the melodic troubadours who first made their mark in the early 2000s. These days he's talking about doing something different for a while, and he's mentioned a few directions that might take him: writing more songs with Suzanne Vega, or fulfilling a long-held ambition to work with Shelby Lynne.
Ottewell comes from a different sort of background. He's best known as a member of Gomez, the British rock act whose 1998 debut Bring It On won the Mercury Music Prize. Gomez didn't have a designated frontman; Ottewell, Ian Ball and Tom Gray all sang, though Ottewell took the lead more than his bandmates. After the band's sixth album in 2009, he moved into a solo career, with 2017's A Man Apart his most recent release.
It's a pairing of two songwriters who've spent years at the front of their respective bands and have since stepped out on their own. Walsh's work has always leaned towards the melodic and the singer-songwriter tradition, while Ottewell's time with Gomez saw him working within a loose, collaborative band sound before he found his own footing as a solo artist. Seeing them share a bill gives you a chance to hear them side by side, each bringing the songs and the voice they've spent their careers developing.
