Over-14s synthpop night with Heaven 17 and Peter Coyle at the Leeds Beckett Students' Union.
Heaven 17 and Peter Coyle play Leeds Beckett Students' Union on Friday 23 October, with the show starting at 7:00pm. It's presented by SJM Concerts, and there's a strict age restriction: over-14s only.
For those who don't know the name, Heaven 17 is a British synthpop band from Sheffield, South Yorkshire. They formed in 1980 when Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn Ware split from The Human League to set up the production company British Electric Foundation (BEF), and they brought in photographer Glenn Gregory on vocals. They took their name from a fictional pop group in Anthony Burgess's novel A Clockwork Orange. Contrary to popular belief, they weren't New Romantics; like The Human League, they built their sound on synthesizers and drum machines.
Their debut single, '(We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang', drew plenty of attention and was banned by the BBC for its overtly political lyrics. 'Temptation', featuring guest vocalist Carol Kenyon, reached number two in the UK in the summer of 1983, from the album The Luxury Gap, which peaked at number four. Beyond their own records, they helped launch Tina Turner's solo career in 1983 and contributed vocals to the Band Aid single in 1984. After a quiet early 1990s, they reunited in 1996 with Bigger Than America.
