Free meet-up of Engage Yorkshire representatives to make protest collages, tour the Steve McQueen 'Resistance' exhibition and attend its private view.
Engage Yorkshire are hosting a meet-up for creatives at Leeds Art Gallery on Thursday 5 November, from 15:00 to 20:00. It's run by the Yorkshire reps Angie, Rach and Jen, and the whole afternoon is built around the exhibition Steve McQueen: Resistance - How Protest Shaped Britain and Photography Shaped Protest.
The show was conceived by artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen and curated with Clarrie Wallis and Emma Lewis of Turner Contemporary. It pulls together a century of activism, from the radical suffrage movement in 1903 through to the Anti-Iraq War protests of 2003, and focuses on the overlooked histories of individuals and communities whose acts of resistance helped shape modern Britain. It's a long stretch of time to cover, and the photography is the thread that holds it all together.
Rather than just walking through, the meet-up turns the exhibition into something you do. You'll spend part of the afternoon making protest collages, then take a tour of the show, and finish by attending the private view. It's a good way to see the work and meet other creatives in the city at the same time.
