Autobiographical theatre piece about what it means to live in a world of words when you don't know how to use them.
D is for Dyslexia comes to Carriageworks Theatre on Thursday 22 October, with Matt on stage. It's an autobiographical piece of theatre that starts with a pretty simple question: what does it mean to live in a world surrounded by words when you don't know how to use them?
From there, Matt takes the long way around. He meanders, digresses and pontificates through the history of language, how brains work and the experience of dyslexia within the education system. It's described as playful, funny and honest, and the title tells you exactly where the focus lies. If you've ever wondered what it's like to navigate a world built on reading and writing when the basics don't click the way they're supposed to, this is the one to see.
The show is staged at Carriageworks Theatre, a Grade II Listed building that's been part of the city centre for a long time. It stood as the West Riding Carriage Manufactory from 1848 before it was reimagined and opened in 2005 as a cultural hub. These days it's home to the Leeds Community Arts Network, a group of fourteen community-led drama, musical, opera and youth theatre societies, and to the resident youth theatre Carriageworks Young Theatre Makers. It also hosts the Leeds Young Film Festival, INDIs Film Festival, Leeds Lit Festival and Photo North Festival.
