Oil painting workshop led by Sandra, owner and curator of the Bowery, to learn cold wax technique and build abstract landscapes.
Bowery is hosting a workshop on cold wax oil painting on Sunday 1 November, with a focus on colour, light and texture. It runs from 10:30 in the morning, and the whole thing is led by Sandra, the owner and curator of the gallery.
If you've never come across it, cold wax is a medium you mix into your oil paints. The big draw is that it makes them dry in minutes rather than days, so you can work in layers without waiting for each one to set. That's where the texture comes in — you can build up the surface and keep going in a single session, rather than leaving a canvas to dry for a week between passes. The workshop introduces the technique from the ground up and shows you how to use it to build abstract landscapes, pushing oils into a more expressive, painterly register than you'd get with traditional oil painting.
It's a full-day thing, so there's plenty of time to get stuck in. All the materials are provided, which is handy if you don't already have a stash of cold wax and oils at home. There's a short lunch break of about twenty minutes at 12:30, so you can stretch your legs and reset before heading back to the easel for the afternoon.
