Norfolk-born singer-songwriter Beth Orton brings her latest album The Ground Above to the Howard Assembly Room, marking her first performance at the venue.
Beth Orton plays the Howard Assembly Room on Friday 16 October, her first time performing at the venue. She's touring her ninth studio album, The Ground Above, which she produced herself in her London home studio around a battered old piano she saved from Camden Market.
It builds on 2022's Weather Alive, but shifts the mood. Where her previous work was noted for its ethereal, atmospheric textures, this collection is more direct — an urgent exploration of survival, renewal and looking back through the lens of time, bridging folk, spiritual jazz and the Great American Songbook. She works as producer and bandleader with a collaborative approach, and the night centres on this latest record.
Orton is a Norfolk-born singer-songwriter and BRIT Award winner who first made her mark in 1996 with her debut, Trailer Park. Since then, she's moved from early folktronica into more traditional rock and stripped-back acoustic styles, and this show brings more than three decades of music to the city. Her career has been defined by genre-defying collaborations with William Orbit, the Chemical Brothers, Andy Weatherall, Bert Jansch and Jim O'Rourke.
