Talk presented by Matthew Merrick on the work of Colombian artist Beatriz González, exploring her paintings, prints and installations.
Northlight Arts Centre is hosting a talk on the Colombian artist Beatriz González on Wednesday 21 October, with Matthew Merrick leading the discussion. It's a joint presentation by Northlight and the Leeds Art History Group, and it'll run from 7pm to 9pm, with doors opening at 6.30pm.
González worked for more than six decades, and her output went well beyond painting: she made prints, furniture and installations that looked closely at Colombian society, politics and collective memory. She's often linked to Pop Art, and you can see why in her visual language — bold colour, simplified figures and familiar imagery. She'd rework celebrated European paintings alongside photographs from newspapers and popular culture, using the two to question how images are reproduced, consumed and remembered.
There's a shift in her work that's worth following. It moves between humour, satire and mourning, and as political violence intensified in Colombia, the imagery grew darker. It became increasingly concerned with grief, loss and the experiences left out of official accounts of history, so the talk should cover how her work changed as the country did.
