One-off night of folk music, stories and poetry by performance poet Bassie Gracie and folk musician Memphis Gerald.
Bassie Gracie and Memphis Gerald are teaming up at Hyde Park Book Club on Sunday 25 October, a one-off night that brings together two very different ways of working the room. Gracie is a performance poet; Gerald is a folk musician. On the night, they'll be sharing the stage for a mix of folk music, stories and poetry, with the music and the spoken word running side by side rather than taking turns.
It's a long one, too. The show runs for two and a half hours, and Gracie is organising it herself, so it's her night to shape. That length gives them plenty of room to let the different parts breathe — the songs, the stories and the poetry each getting their own space rather than being squeezed into a standard set. If you're used to a quick support act followed by a main set, this is a different sort of evening: a single, extended performance with two people working together across the whole thing.
Hyde Park Book Club is on Headingley Lane, and it's a venue with two distinct spaces. There's the Snug, which holds 50, and the Main Room, which holds 150. It's worth keeping in mind that the venue doesn't provide an instrumental backline or amps, so everything that makes a sound that night is brought in by the performers themselves.
