Ballet Cymru marks its 40th birthday with three pieces of dance made in Wales, including a tribute to Dylan Thomas, at The Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre.
Ballet Cymru are coming to The Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre on Wednesday 18 November, bringing their 40th anniversary celebrations to Leeds with an evening of dance made in Wales. It's a triple bill that pulls from different corners of the company's current work, so you get three distinct pieces in one night rather than a single long performance.
The evening opens with Woven, set to music by Welsh harpist Catrin Finch in collaboration with Irish violinist Aoife NĪÆ Bhriain. From there it moves to Sensible Co-Existence, a new work by Marcus J Willis, Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre, created specifically for Ballet Cymru's dancers. The final piece is Poems and Tiger Eggs, the company's love letter to Dylan Thomas, choreographed by Artistic Directors Darius James OBE and Amy Doughty, with readings of Thomas's poems by patron and Welsh icon Cerys Matthews OBE.
Between the three, there's a fair bit of new ground. Sensible Co-Existence was made for this specific company, and Poems and Tiger Eggs brings in the voice of Cerys Matthews to read Thomas's poetry alongside the dance. The whole thing runs for about two hours, including a 20-minute interval, so it's a full evening out rather than a quick stop.
