The Heathen Kings, a Yorkshire folk trio, play a session of traditional and self-penned folk songs at Seven Arts.
The Heathen Kings are playing at Seven Arts on Saturday 14 November, as part of the Autumn Sessions. It's an afternoon session, running from 16:00 to 18:00 in the Seven Bar, so you're in and out well before the evening kicks in.
They're a folk trio from Yorkshire, and the sound they build comes from guitar and bouzouki paired with bass and three-part vocals. The bouzouki is the one that stands out here — it's a long-necked lute from Greece that's become a staple of Irish and Scottish folk, and it gives the acoustic side of things a bit more ring and drive than a guitar alone. The three-part harmony is the other half of the equation, and that's where the 'fearless' part of their description comes in: they're not just singing in unison, they're working three distinct lines at once.
Their set pulls from a few different places. There are traditional songs from across the British Isles, which is the bedrock of the folk tradition they're working in, but they also bring in their own self-penned material and folk they've borrowed from further afield. It's a broad enough reach that you'll hear things that feel familiar alongside things that don't quite fit into one easy category.
