Live concert by the Arun Ramamurthy Trio, a trio that blends South Indian Carnatic music with contemporary jazz, at the Howard Assembly Room.
The Arun Ramamurthy Trio play Howard Assembly Room on Tuesday 20 October, their first Leeds date since their latest album came out. It's a trio led by violinist Arun Ramamurthy, and the music sits right where South Indian Carnatic music meets the improvisational side of contemporary jazz. The two traditions don't just run alongside each other; they weave together, with the melodic lines of the violin pulling from one and the jazz influence shaping the other. It's a sound that's as much about the conversation between the players as it is about the traditions they're drawing from.
Ramamurthy doesn't do this alone. He's backed by drummer Sameer Gupta and electric bassist Damon Banks, and the three have worked together for years. That shared history is a big part of how they play: they describe their performances as unfolding with spontaneity, so what happens on stage changes from night to night. Much of what they'll be playing comes from New Moon, the album they released on 20 September 2024, which looks at ancestry, identity and the way knowledge passes down through generations.
They've played a fair few stages before this one, including Jazz at Lincoln Center and The Kennedy Center in the US, Bimhuis in Amsterdam and the Northampton Jazz Festival. This is a trio that's spent plenty of time on the road, and the set will draw on that experience as much as the new record.
