Free exhibition of Anna Whitehouse's sculptures, which combine bottle forms and macroscopic textures to create surreal natural worlds.
Anna Whitehouse is showing at The Sculpture Gallery in the Leeds Corn Exchange throughout October, with the exhibition running from 1 October to 26 October. If you're around the city during that window, it's a good one to keep on your radar.
Whitehouse is a Harrogate-based sculptor whose work draws on scientific imagery and research. For the last decade, she's returned to bottle forms and an experimental approach to textures, and she talks about the bottle as a symbol for something that can hold something precious, valuable or secret — a poison or a cure. She pairs that with structures and textures taken from macro and microscopic imagery to build surreal worlds of hidden landscapes and mutated flora and fauna, and she describes her aim as sparking a childlike sense of wonder at the natural world. It's the kind of work that asks you to look closer, and then look even closer.

Beyond the studio, she holds a first-class BA Hons in Three-Dimensional Design from Manchester School of Art, takes on public art commissions, and teaches ceramics to all ages. The exhibition is free to visit, so you can drop in whenever suits you between the start and end dates. If you want to catch her in person, there's a launch event on Sunday 4 October from 1:30pm to 4:30pm. The gallery is on the balcony of the Leeds Corn Exchange on Call Lane, LS1 7BR.
