Comedy wine-tasting evening where guests sample six wines while a comedian blends stand-up humour with wine education.
An Idiot's Guide to Wine opens at Project House on Saturday 21 November, and it stays in the Armley venue through to 12 December. It's a comedy wine-tasting evening written by Australian comedian Merrick Watts, who describes himself as the only comedian in the world to hold a WSET Level 3 qualification. The whole thing runs about 70 minutes, and over that time you'll sample six different wine varietals from around the world. The performance blends stand-up humour with approachable wine education, pitched at seasoned connoisseurs and total beginners alike, so it works whether you can tell a Bordeaux from a Burgundy or you've never held a glass in your life.
One thing worth knowing is that Watts wrote the show, but he doesn't perform it himself. Instead, it's delivered by a comedian he's hand-selected, so you're getting his material and his wine knowledge through someone else's delivery. The format is straightforward: you taste your way through six wines while the stand-up runs alongside, with the educational bits kept accessible rather than getting bogged down in jargon. It's as much about the comedy as it is about the wine, so it's a fair shout for a night out that gives you something to actually do while you're sitting there.
