Talk and book signing by David Lascelles, Earl of Harewood, about his book 'Out of Colditz', part of Farsley Lit Fest 2026.
David Lascelles, Earl of Harewood, is speaking at The Old Woollen on Monday 26 October, as part of Farsley Lit Fest 2026. The evening is built around his book Out of Colditz, which tells the true story of the 'Prominente' — the high-profile British establishment figures held at Colditz Castle during the Second World War. They were the prisoners whose lives were spared when the SS camp head, Gottlob Berger, disobeyed orders.
Lascelles is a first cousin once removed of Queen Elizabeth II, the son of George, Earl of Harewood, and the grandson of the 10th Earl of Harewood. He's also the Honorary President of Leeds United and the owner of Harewood House, so he's a familiar name around here. Beyond the writing, he's a BAFTA-winning film and television producer; Inspector Morse won a BAFTA and a Royal Television Society award, and his film credits include The Wedding Gift, The Wisdom of Crocodiles, and Shakespeare's Richard III. He also co-founded the campaign group Heirs of Slavery, which has worked to confront his family's past ties to the transatlantic slave trade.
