Spoken word evening with Kirsty Taylor, Lence and Simone Yasmin, plus an open mic, in the historic pool hall of Bramley Baths.
Simone Yasmin headlines After Hours at the Baths: The Deep End at Bramley Baths on Saturday 24 October, from 19:30 to 21:00. It's a spoken word night that takes over the historic pool hall after hours, and the way you watch it is part of the thing: you can either sit poolside, kick off your shoes and paddle your feet in the water, or take a spot on the balcony overlooking the pool. The pool isn't open for swimming, but you're right there with it.
Yasmin shares the bill with Kirsty Taylor and Lence, and there's an open mic too — three-minute slots, first-come first-served, so if you've got something you want to say, you can get up there yourself. The performances draw on themes of water, community, identity and the heritage and history of the Baths, and the open mic is there for the room to respond to the pool and the stories held within its walls.
Bramley Baths is a community-led, not-for-profit centre for fitness, health and fun, housing a public gym, swimming pool, steam room and space for community events, meetings and fitness classes. It was built on the site of a foundry and first opened as a pool and public bath-house in 1904, when local residents could wash, swim and use the Russian Steam Baths so fashionable with the Edwardians. The foundry chimney, built with 8,000 Kirkstall bricks, still towers over the site and can be seen from across Leeds.
