Whales

Whales are playing Aura Nightclub on Saturday, October 10, starting at 9:30 PM. They're a four-piece from Chicago, Illinois, and they've been together since 2009, so they're not exactly a new act. Their sound sits in the independent rock tradition, drawing in equal parts from noisepop and shoegaze. It's built on focused, propulsive rhythms and low-end melodies, topped with turbulent, psychedelic guitar textures and hypnagogic vocals. If you're familiar with those terms, you've got a good handle on what to expect: a loud, textured wall of sound that doesn't let up.

Aura Nightclub is over in Midtown, at 3832 Main Street, and it's a 21+ venue. The club bills itself as a liquor-fueled playhouse designed for the discerning clubgoer, which fits the late-night timing of this one. The show runs well into the early hours, with the night expected to carry on until 2:00 AM. If you're planning on staying for the whole thing, you'll want to keep that in mind—it's more of a late-night outing than a standard evening concert.

Tickets run from $18.95 to $31.24, and since it's a 21+ room, you'll need your ID at the door. Between the 9:30 PM start and the 2:00 AM finish, it's a long stretch of music, so come prepared for a full night.
